ASSIST News Service (ANS) -
PO Box 609, Lake Forest, CA 92609-0609 USA Friday, February 5, 2010 Pakistani lawyers back their Muslim colleague in Christian maid murder case By Dan Wooding Founder of ASSIST Ministries LAHORE, PAKISTAN (ANS) -- Pakistan’s lawyers’ community on Friday, February 4, 2010, demanded that all charges against Advocate Muhammad Naeem, who is accused of torturing his Christian maid to death, be dropped. They shouted slogans to press their demand when Muhammad Naeem was presented to court after the end of his six days police remand. Shazia, 12, a Christian maid, was found dead in Muhammad Naeem’s house on Friday, January 22, 2010. Mr. Nasir Saeed, Director Centre for Legal Aid, Assistance and Settlement UK told ANS that the protesting lawyers allege that the police First Information Report (FIR) against Muhammad Naeem is “false” and that he is “innocent.” According to Mr. Saeed, when the magistrate asked the police to produce the findings of the investigations they (the police) said they were yet to complete investigation therefore it was not possible for the magistrate to reach any decision. “This resulted in Naeem being given a further five days on remand,” he said. “The police are still waiting for the medical examination report and as soon as it is received, the investigation will be completed.” Mr. Saeed added that CLAAS’s lawyer, Nasir Anjum, and also court clerk, Asher, were present in court to witness all of this. ANS has discovered that Naeem’s wife, his sister in-law and son, are also named in the First Information (Police) Report (FIR) Shazia’s case but they were granted bail before the arrest. On February 3, 2010, they all appeared in the court session to hear the confirmation of their bails. Mr. Saeed said CLAAS’s lawyers were also present in court and prepared to argue the case for the cancellation of their bail. The Director CLAAS-UK described the situation as “very sensitive,” claiming that CLAAS was trying its best to handle this case “very carefully.” He alleged that Mohammad Naeem is being fully supported by the Lahore Bar Association while even some Christian lawyers have declined to support us (CLAAS) in this case. “We have however, been supported by our partners and the media and will fear no evil, but the Lord will lead us into the path of righteousness for His namesake,” he said. “We ask that you please continue to support us and remember us, and Shazia's family, in your every day prayers and also pray that justice is served to the perpetrators of this crime,” concluded Mr. Saeed.
