BEVERLY HILLS, CA (ANS – November 29, 2016) – Christian media expert, Dr. Ted Baehr, Founder and Publisher of Movieguide®, says it has been a “miraculous year” for faith and family films.
During an interview at the recent Media Fellowship International (MFI) 18th Annual Praise Breakfast at the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly Hills, California, Baehr said, “It’s been a miraculous year in terms of movies with faith and values, and it’s getting better every month.”
Among the films he especially liked, were: “Risen,” an American Biblical drama film directed by Kevin Reynolds; “God’s Not Dead II,” the latest courtroom drama from evangelical production company, Pure Flix; and “Young Messiah,” which is about Jesus as a seven-year-old child, based on the book, “Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt,” written by Anne Rice, and directed by Iranian-born Christian director, Cyrus Nowrasteh.
“It’s been one movie a week and now it’s going to be two or three movies a week up until December 31st, which is absolutely incredible because when we started our work, there was only one movie with positive Christian content,” said Dr. Baehr, who is also Chairman of the Christian Film and Television Commission, a division of Good News Communications, Inc.
“We’ve shown people in Hollywood how to make more money by making movies with faith and values, because the average person, anywhere in the world, wants faith and values in their films. They want hope, redemption, and revival. They also actually want to be healed, so we tell producers that they can do better at the box office when they put good, truth, and beauty themes into their movies.”
Dr. Baehr then singled out for praise, Mel Gibson’s latest movie, “Hacksaw Ridge,” the true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds. Doss was drafted and ostracized by fellow soldiers for his pacifist stance but went on to earn respect and adoration for his bravery, selflessness and compassion after he risked his life — without firing a shot — to save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa.
“It is a beautiful, evangelistic movie that has convinced me that Mel Gibson is doing his best movies now,” said Baehr, who often helps producers like Gibson with script analysis, went onto say.
“In fact we went over the dialogue for the film and Mel agreed to take out the F word and other words and expressions from ‘Hacksaw Ridge.’ So he cleaned up the foul language from the movie.”
Each year around Oscar® time, Movieguide® hosts its annual Awards Show, where it rewards the best family-friendly movies and TV shows of the previous year. It also rewards the best films for mature audiences and awards the $200,000 Epiphany Prizes, the $50,000 Chronos Prize for Inspiring Screenplays by Established Filmmakers, the $50,000 Kairos Prize for Spiritually Uplifting Screenplays sponsored by grants from the John Templeton Foundation.
The 25th Annual Movieguide® Awards will take place at the Universal Hilton Hotel, on February 10, 2017 and, in addition to the awards, Dr. Baehr will present his highly-anticipated annual statistical analysis based on the Movieguide’s reviews. His in-depth study consistently shows studio executives and filmmakers that family-friendly, spiritually uplifting content can significantly increase the profitability of their movies.
The star-studded event will be shown on Reelz Channel at the end of February.
Dr. Baehr concluded our interview, which is one of several featured on my “Inside Hollywood with Dan Wooding” TV show, by saying, “I’m encouraged that every day is a God-given miracle. Every day is a blessing and every day is a day that we can change the life of someone.”
