PAKISTAN (ANS – Nov. 28, 2017) — The case of a 70-year-old man accused of blasphemy has been closed after his death.
According to Christians in Pakistan, https://www.christiansinpakistan.com, Mukhtar Masih was accused of fake blasphemy charges under sections 295-A and 298 PPC, upon property matters. Gohar Abbas, SHO of the police station Cantt Gujranwala, was the complainant of the case.
On January 28, the Police attacked the house of Mukhtar Masih, caught him and slapped him harshly. Later, the police caught Masih’s elder son and tortured him in order to pressurize Mukhtar to accept the fake blasphemy charges against him.
The website reports that earlier, police took them into the sitting room of the local counsellor, Mehr Latif, where they accused both the father and the son of blasphemy, and let the police take them to the police station.
In the police station, law enforcement threatened Mukhtar Masih to accept the charge against him, otherwise his family woud face more trouble. After two days, the police released Anjum, while they sent Mukhtar Masih to the jail for the judicial investigation.
Mukhtar Masih and his family have suffered much due to the accusation of blasphemy. After Mukhtar’s arrest, his family went into hiding and stayed at The Voice Society safe house until his bail was granted. Later, the family moved to Abbotabad.
In August, Mukhtar Masih was operated on for a knee injury and treated with a heavy dose of antibiotics. Later, he was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer and a hole in his small intestine, according to his son.
Furthermore, he was suffering from mental trauma as a result of the case. After suffering for few months, Mukhtar lost his battle for life on November 2, 2017 in Bagh hospital , Abbotabad and was also buried there. Mukhtar Masih left behind him two sons, two daughter-in-laws, one daughter, and five grandchildren.
The final hearing of Masih’s case occurred on November 20, 2017, when the Honorable Additional Judge Saadat Rasool received Masih’s death certificate. The judge closed the as yet still-pending case of blasphemy against Masih.
Several Christians have been killed, and others jailed, in Pakistan following fake charges of blasphemy, including the Christian woman Asia Bibi, who has been on death row since 2010.
