Star 88 FM and ANS News: Why Listener-Supported Media Matters

ASSIST GLOBE FINAL 400x400 smallerALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO (ANS — December 7, 2017) — Ok, I admit it: I’m a fan of public media. Both my wife and I are groupies of PBS television, and I’m a junkie for public radio. What I love about public formats is that it affords the listener to be a part of the success — or failure — of the program. Public media is the people’s media; it cultivates or crashes with people’s interest and support.

And though many people are aware of PBS or NPR radio, they may not be as aware of listener-supported Christian programing. Like PBS, it, too, is dependent upon people to make is successful. And beyond radio and TV, there are news services like ASSIST News Service (ANS), all dependent on the generosity of its listeners, readers, and supporters. In all of these media outlets, it takes people — through prayer and provision — to make the ministry prosperous.

Star 88 smallerI have the honor of being a guest on a local listener-supported radio station, Star 88 FM, broadcast from Albuquerque, New Mexico. In years past I was the co-host on a broadcast called Theology Thursday. But more recently I’ve been the regular guest on 3 Degrees to New Mexico; a program dedicated to the historical and contemporary ties New Mexico has to the world. As part of the Morning Invasion — hosted by Stevo and Dex — 3 Degrees to New Mexico is more than just history; it’s a hoot. We have a fun talking up a storm, laughing, and encouraging our listeners in Christ.

Dan Wooding with Brian NixonLikewise, I’ve had the privilege of writing for my friend Dan Wooding and ANS for over twelve years. What started off as an encouragement from Dan to write up a story about Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, moved to more writing about cultural and theological topics and events. It’s been an amazing ride, one I hope doesn’t stop.

But here’s the catch: ministries like ANS and Starr 88 need the prayers and provision of people like you.  It’s because of the generous support of listeners, readers, and—dare I say—Christian activists (Christians actively engaged in the world), that the ministries flourish or fail.

Before the year-end, I’d encourage you to help ministries like ANS or Star 88 flourish. We covet your prayers and provision, helping keep a solid witness for Christ in the world via the word—both spoken (radio) and written (journalism).

In a world where there is cause for deep concern, consider those that labor for Christ in the midst of the chaos. And remember: public Christian media matters because the people it reaches for Christ matter.
