NASHVILLE, TN (ANS — September 22. 2015) — Living in a post-modern society means believing in the idea of absolute truth isn’t exactly popular. The norm in America today is embracing others’ beliefs no matter what. Words like “tolerance” and “acceptance” trump “truth” and “faith.” So what is the Christian supposed to do? How can we stand firm in conviction when our convictions are no longer the norm?
In Defying Normal: Soaring Above the Status Quo (Worthy Publishing, October 27, 2015), author and mega-church pastor Skip Heitzig encourages believers to stay true to their faith, even if that means going against the majority crowd.
By tracing the life of the Old Testament prophet Daniel, Heitzig offers a model for how present-day Christians can live with integrity in the face of adversity. “When you think about it, Daniel was a lot like Jesus—a balance between gracious compliance to God and brazen nonconformity to the world,” Heitzig writes.
Each chapter of Defying Normal focuses on eight characteristics of Daniel: self-control, faith, humility, integrity, dependence, courage, hope, and balance. These characteristics are what allowed Daniel to defy normal while living in Babylonian captivity, and although Daniel lived over 2,000 years ago, these are the same characteristics that will enable Christians today to live out their faith boldly and with assurance.
Heitzig helps connect Daniel’s life and world to our own with an easy-to-follow application section at the end of each chapter entitled “Dare to Defy Normal,” making Defying Normal ideal for individual or group study.
In the midst of so many negative and doomsday opinions, Heitzig is hopeful for the sate of Christianity and the church in our nation and encourages believers to be hopeful too: “You don’t have to lead a life of quiet desperation. You don’t have to go along and live the mundane or blend in with those who fly under the radar. You can defy what is popularly accepted as normal and rise above the boring crowd!”
